Get Started as a UX or Graphic Designer

coursera graphic design

In hiring a designer, I would never take a Coursera certificate as any indication of knowledge after taking this program. There’s also an enormous language barrier for some international students, which makes every part of the program difficult. Some of the written assignments I reviewed were difficult to understand. It often felt like many students did not understand the requirements of a given assignment at all. I’ve been designing for a long time and I can spot work that doesn’t quite fit much better than newer designers and used the Google reverse image search more than once.

But the assignments and projects in this entire specialization are relatively simple. So if you are serious about a graphic designer’s job, I would recommend practicing your skills with internships or volunteer projects first. The Coursera Graphic Design Specialization by CalArts is something I’ve actually been looking into for awhile, but I never did because I wasn’t sure what it could offer me.

Here’s what I designed using one of my teapot images, the font I chose for ‘cozy’ and the pattern I created.

As a digital product designer, I had to teach myself to finish all assignments with Figma. Years later, I was able to fulfill my dream of becoming a product designer. Visual languages like color palettes, typography, page layouts, etc., are usually pre-defined for better UX consistency and efficiency. I received training to use and apply visual languages properly but rarely got chances to form new ones. The lessons in week four are all about composition and things like hierarchy, narrative, and the relationships between elements.

It turns out this was the last graded assignment, and the rest are only optional. So that’s cool I guess, but I’m going to do the assignments anyway to show you. The objective was to use the same household object as before and focus on the creation of connotative imagery instead. Basically, give the object some context to portray an idea or message. This course is divided into 4 week terms, all concerning the fundamentals that you’ll need to know.

How to start a career in design management

This seems to contradict what else I’ve read online, so I’m still confused. The typography lessons jump right in with the basics about typography with what each part of a letter is called and some general typography terminology. The lessons go into detail about every part of type, then discuss the differences between a typeface and a font. This is actually something I tried to pay more attention to because I always mix these up.

Lastly, students are asked to make a short book out of the images they create. Lastly, the idea that students will learn everything they need to know to work in interface design, motion graphics, and editorial design is completely inaccurate. This program never touches on interface design or motion graphics, and hardly teaches a single thing about editorial design. Inkscape is a vector design tool that offers broad file support, extensive text manipulation, and both Bezier and Spiro curve types. It also has an extension model that allows new features to be easily installed, and there are some amazing ones available. You need designing and editing software that can handle both text and graphics for graphic design. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, GIMP, CorelDraw, and Canva are some of the popular graphic design software on the market today.

Take into account the learning curve and available support resources, including tutorials and community forums. We also found the resize and the background remover tools very easy to use, and perfect for those with little experience of using design software. Canva is among the best free graphic design software for editing images. We found it makes it very easy to carry out quick changes such as cropping and resizing images, or adding filters, frames, text, and effects. You can do everything in the browser, or via a mobile app, and there are no restrictions on editing images with the free version; for example, no watermarks are applied. For anyone looking to create SVG animations without needing to code, browser-based SVGator makes things super-easy.

Best Graphic Design Software for Windows

Though its layout isn’t as sexy as, say, Photoshop, you still get the advanced photo retouching, drawing and cropping capabilities of the better-known programs. Paint.NET is a free image editing app for Windows that comes with all of the tools one would need for doing some basic photo editing or graphic creation. In Paint.NET, you can adjust levels, install custom brushes, and use the Magic Wand to select areas.

With a convenient pen tool and the designer’s creativity in action, users can freely draw graphics from eye-catching designs to complex arts with ease. The app offers freedom to designers with an infinite canvas to experiment with features and create exceptional beauties. Pixlr X is a quick and easy photo editing tool and ideal for giving your work a quick boost with one-click edits and artistic effects.

While it doesn’t have as many options as other tools out there, it has all you need if you’re just learning how to design. Although the above options are definitely our favourites, we’ve thrown a couple of free graphic design programs into the list as well. These aren’t quite as powerful as the paid-for packages, but they should be adequate if you’re looking to create simple invitations or infographics. GIMP has come a long way as one of the first open-source graphic design software programs.

It does take some getting used to, however, and Photoshop users will likely find the transition unworkable. Inkscape operates on Windows, Mac, and Linux, but the Mac version leaves much to be desired, especially since it doesn’t support high-resolution Retina displays. If you’re on a budget, though, Affinity Design (or any of the other Adobe Illustrator alternatives in this list) might work better for you.

A $9.95 monthly fee is required to remove the watermark from any created meme. InDesign is an ideal solution for branding because of its unique interactive features. You can add immersive elements to your design that can wow clients with an elevated presentation of their brand assets. For example, you can add animation that opens and flips through a brochure or magazine you designed. Affinity Designer is also suitable for beginners as it is easy to learn and use. Covering both bitmap and vector design, CorelDRAW does what Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator do so well separately in one combined package.

It’s a bit easier to use, and you can do it no matter where you are since you don’t need the internet. I’ve even used Procreate to open up my own side business on Etsy selling travel stickers! Figma is collaborative, so you can send a link for someone to join your project and edit right alongside you.

All in all, Vectr is an excellent option for those looking to get their feet wet in vector design. It’s a simple, no-nonsense solution that teaches you how to get started and covers all the features your need. A key feature is that any changes you’ve made will automatically sync across all platforms. Being a web-based platform, you can easily invite team members to work on your designs and share files in real-time. Variable data is a time-saver, as this feature allows you to automatically create multiple variants of the same artwork by merging an Illustrator document with a data source file. Consequently, with the press of a button, you’ll make hundreds of template variations for different projects, from web banners to printable posters and more.

Affinity Photo is a value-priced alternative to Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator for touch-up jobs on existing images. It works with layers and filters to create stunning effects, with both vector and raster images. However, despite the lack of templates, the software is lightweight —taking up very little storage — and offers a generous 30-day free trial. The free version of Canva comes with plenty of helpful tools, but if you want any of the more advanced graphic design tools you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro version. You can use it in the browser for the full experience, but most of its tools are also available for both Android and iOS. Even the best free graphic design software can't really come close to Photoshop's abilities. But, despite the offputting name, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) does a very good job. By default, the interface is kind of clunky, but it's easy to update it to a more Adobe-style feel. You'll be able to work with all the popular file formats without trouble. And you'll find a very capable file manager built in, along similar lines to Adobe's Bridge.

Overall, most of the programs performed similarly, but some outshone the rest. If you are looking for software to create dramatic effects on your photos, consider the number of photo filters the software has. This is shorter than the average 30-day trial, but it’s better than nothing. As with most other Adobe software, this program can be used only through subscription payments.
